Post a Judgment

The Judgment view provides the ability to add new judgments by selecting the Post a Judgment push-button.  The Post a Judgment dialog is displayed.  The appropriate information is entered and the Save push-button is selected.  If the Save is successful, the Judgment view is displayed and the new judgment appears on the view.  If the save is unsuccessful the errors are displayed in the Messages dialog.  The Post a Judgment push-button is disabled for inactive accounts.

When posting a judgment transaction, any external transactions (payments, etc.) that occurred between the effective date of the judgment and the current processing date (i.e., the judgment transaction does not automatically make adjustments to these transactions) must be reversed.  After the judgment is posted the original transactions may be reposted in effective date order so Recovery Accounting can correctly calculate the accruals on the new balance.

There is no restriction on the number of judgments that may be placed on the account.  Each new judgment event supersedes any previous judgments for the account.

Follow these steps to post a judgment:

  1. Access the account using the Access Account option on the Home page or Navigation menu.  The Collections or Accounting views are displayed.  If the Collections views are displayed, select the Accounting hyperlink in the upper right-hand corner.  The Accounting views are displayed.
  2. Reverse any external transactions posted between the effective date of the judgment and the current processing date.  This ensures the balances are correct as of the effective date of the judgment.

  3. From the Judgment view, select the Post a Judgment push-button.  The Post a Judgment dialog is displayed.
  4. Specify the date the judgment is or was effective using the Effective Date field.  The date may be entered in the appropriate format or selected using the calendar widget.  If a date is not specified it defaults to the current processing date.

  5. Indicate the date the judgment expires in the Expiration Date field.  The date may be entered in the appropriate format or selected using the calendar widget.

  6. Specify a Description for the judgment.

  7. Specify the Total Judgment Balance.  The amount must equal the sum of the Principal Balance, Interest Balance, and the Recovery Costs Balance (Total).

  8. Specify the new judgment principal balance, interest amount, and total cost balance amounts for the account using the Principal Balance, Interest Balance, and the Recovery Costs Balance (Total) fields.

  9. For each cost associated with the account indicate the new judgment cost balance using the Judgment Amount fields available for each cost.  If the cost was not included in the judgment leave the corresponding Judgment Amount field blank.

  10. Select the Save push-button.  If the save is successful, the Post a Judgment dialog is closed and the Judgment view is displayed with the new judgment.  If the save is unsuccessful the errors are displayed in the Messages dialog.

  11. The Cancel push-button may be used to cancel the post a judgment request.  If this push-button is selected the Post a Judgment dialog is closed and the Judgment view is displayed.

  12. Re-post any external transactions that were reversed in step 2.
